Sensipar - Cinacalcet (INN) is a drug that acts as a
calcimimetic (i.e. it mimics the action of calcium on tissues) by
allosteric activation of the calcium-sensing receptor that is expressed in
various human organ tissues. It is sold by Amgen under the trade name
Sensipar® in North America and Australia and as Mimpara® in Europe.
Cinacalcet is used to treat hyperparathyroidism (elevated parathyroid
hormone levels), a consequence of parathyroid tumors and chronic renal
failure.
For dialysis patients . . .
Sensipar® is a medicine that can help treat dialysis patients with
imbalances of phosphorus, calcium, and PTH, known as secondary
hyperparathyroidism. On this site, you will learn about secondary HPT in
dialysis patients and treatment with Sensipar®.
The condition you may know the least about can have a big impact on your
health.
This condition is called secondary hyperparathyroidism
(high-per-pair-uh-THIGH-royd-izm), or secondary HPT. In secondary HPT,
your parathyroid glands make too much parathyroid hormone (PTH), your
kidneys do not produce enough vitamin D, and your calcium and phosphorus
are out of balance. Even though you may not have any symptoms, treating
secondary HPT is important. Remember to Always Seek Advice from
your Physician.
